Adam and Jesus... Romans 5:12-21 WOW

Death Through Adam, Life Through Christ
This is an amazing piece of scripture.  In it, The Apostle Paul explains how Sin and Death came to Adam and Eve and how it passed on to their descendents.  Quite simply they disobeyed God’s command!  Paul then goes on to show how God’s Grace provides righteousness through our acceptance and belief in Jesus who is the Christ.
12 Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned— 13 To be sure, sin was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not charged against anyone’s account where there is no law. 14 Nevertheless, death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even over those who did not sin by breaking a command, as did Adam, who is a pattern of the one to come.
15 But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many! 16 Nor can the gift of God be compared with the result of one man’s sin: The judgment followed one sin and brought condemnation, but the gift followed many trespasses and brought justification. 17 For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ!
18 Consequently, just as one trespass resulted in condemnation for all people, so also one righteous act resulted in justification and life for all people. 19 For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.20 The law was brought in so that the trespass might increase. But where sin increased, grace increased all the more, 21 so that, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.(NIV)
Look at Genesis 2… Here, God gives a specific command to Adam of what he MUST NOT do and the consequences should he disobey! The “Sin” was disobeying God and eating of the tree.  The ultimate consequence was death.  15 The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. 16 And the LORD God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”
In Genesis 3 we see the reaction of Adam and Eve when confronted with their Sin. Blame someone else! That carries on today. 11…Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?” 12 The man said, “The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.” 13 Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?”  The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

Paul's Sanctification... Romans 7:15

The Apostle Paul had been "Justified" during the episode on the "Road to Damascus". Jesus the Christ confronted him. Paul accepted him as his personal Savior giving up his persecution of the Christians. By accepting Jesus, Paul was made right with God.

He then began his journey of "Sanctification". He was one of the greatest teachers of all, yet he really struggled. Here is an example of what he had to say about it.

The Apostle Paul laments in the 7th chapter of his letter to the Romans (NIV)... 15 I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. 16And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. 17As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. 18I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing.

Justification, Sanctification and Glorification

Some time ago in our Sunday School Class we were studying the Apostle Paul's Letter to the Romans. During this I discovered something significant for me. There are three words which I have heard used many times, but I never looked in depth at their definitions. They are "Justification", "Sanctification", and Glorification". After reading many folks definitions I have made my personal definitions. They are:

  • Justification - That step in which I accept Jesus who is the Christ as my personal Savior. Through this I have a saving relationship with God. Because of this my personal sins of omission and commission, past, present and future are are all absolved.
  • Sanctification - That step which occurs after "Justification" in which the Holy Spirit helps me to become more like Jesus in all that I think and do. It is a process that will continue until I die.
  • Glorification - That step which occurs when I go to spend eternity with my Lord, Jesus who is the Christ. At that point, I truly become like him and am finally sin free. Wonderful!
